Toroni at Greek mythology was married to Proteas who was the son of Poseidon. According to mythology, her children were killed after a battle with the mythical hero Hercules.

According to archaeologists, first signs of life in the region are prehistoric, from the Paleolithic era. The city of Toroni was founded by colonizers with origin from Chalkida in the late 8th century B.C. Toroni due to its geographical location has always played a leading role in major battles and wars in the distance of years.

At the beginning of the 5th century B.C. was forced to ally with the Armada of Xerxes, King of Persia, in the campaign against the Athenians. A few decades later, in the late 5th century B.C. as it recounts the great historian Thoukididis, Toroni plays a leading role in the battle of Athens and Sparta during the Peloponnesian wars, allying herself sometimes with one side and sometimes with the other.

In the mid 4th century BC Toroni is sacked by King Philip II of Macedonia, becoming later a springboard for the great campaign of Great Alexander in East. Towards the end of the classical period the Toroni was invaded by the Romans.

During Byzantine years the Toroni was a dependency for many monasteries of Mount Athos. In the late 19th century which was taken by the Ottoman Empire. By the destructive fury of the Turks didn’t escape the majestic city walls where some of the blocks were used to build roads in Thessaloniki and Istanbul.

In modern history the Toroni and the amazing natural harbor of Porto Koufo constituted important refuge of the German occupying forces during the period 1940-44. The position of Toroni helped the Germans to have absolute control of the Northeastern Aegean Sea.

Today the Toroni is a great summer destination attracting thousands of tourists from around the world for the sake of amazing sandy beach 3 km long and the crystal clean blue waters of the sea.
